“Making movies is a hard thing, and it's slow. So you can glorify the product, but the process is difficult no matter who you are.”

- Greta Gerwig

It’s not always as glamorous as it looks in the movies, right? Being an artist, working in film & television, the entertainment industry, or other creative professions can be exhausting and demanding work! And the culture of arts and entertainment can be especially fraught for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ folx. As an artist, you’re passionate about your creative work, and something keeps drawing you to it… But you want to figure out how to take care of yourself while following that passion, and find a sense of balance so you don’t burn out.

You’re dealing with so much stress related to the demands, pressure, and long hours of the industry. Maybe this is impacting your relationship with your partner(s), and you’re not sure how to stop bringing that stress home with you. Maybe your anxiety is getting more and more difficult to manage as you think ahead to how you’re going to find your next freelance job, make that next career move, or try to navigate planning for the future while working in a non-traditional industry like this. Maybe you’re experiencing imposter syndrome when it comes to networking, applying for gigs, or trying to get your next project off the ground. Maybe you had a negative or traumatic experience on a job, and you don’t know who to talk to about it. Or maybe you’re not in the industry yourself, but you’re dating or partnered with someone who is - and you’re struggling to understand and connect when their work, schedule, relationships with coworkers, and career path are so different from yours.

You’re not alone. While these might not be the kinds of things people talk about around the craft services table, lots of people in film, television, and other creative industries have experienced stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health issues. If you’ve been trying to just “power through it” and keep working, hoping this will go away and you’ll start feeling better, but that hasn’t happened yet… It’s okay to talk to someone about it.

I have a background in visual arts, and used to work in the film and tv industry myself. I know the challenges of early call times and long days on set, the issues that can come up around boundaries when crew members spend 12+ hours a day together, and the stress this work can place on your mental health, personal life, and relationships! I’ve experienced the highs and the lows of working on creative projects, and I understand that for many people this is not “just a job”, but something that is a core part of their values, identity, and sense of purpose.

In our work together, you will learn helpful strategies to manage stress and anxiety, and make changes in your life and habits to find that important sense of balance so you can continue pursuing this work in a more sustainable way. We will explore the importance of creative work in your life to help you gain clarity about your career and identity, and strengthen your self-esteem and confidence. We will get to the heart of old negative beliefs and experiences that may be holding you back, and help you start to shift how these are affecting you in the present so the past does not have to dictate your future. Whatever it is that is bringing you to therapy, I look forward to creatively collaborating with you to help you continue working on the projects that mean so much to you and share so much with the world!
